THE I AM FOUNDATION: Gifting Books & Music
Worldwide
CAFE
ONE THREE is proud to support the I AM Foundation.
The I AM Foundation stands for children, adults,
literacy, self-esteem, love and unity of all people. We are
committed to doing our part in creating the more loving and
peaceful world most of us all envision.
This organization was founded on the principle of generosity
and givingness. We know that all good comes back and there
is enough of everything for all of us to share and enjoy. The
I AM Foundation mission is inspiring millions of children and
adults worldwide by gifting them with educational books and
music.
An
honorary dinner is being held Wednesday, May 16, 2007. Contributors
will receive tickets to the event with the honorable Jeff Goonewardena,
Consul General for Sri Lanka to Columbia and Venezuela. CAFE
ONE THREE will be catering the event. For more information, click

DESSERTS
BY MICHAEL LUNSFORD
"Bartender by night, baker by late night. I have been
cooking and baking since the age of five, mostly out of necessity
of feeding my insatiable sweet tooth and having both parents
working. I grew up in the Texas kitchens of my mother/mentor,
as well as my aunt and uncle who owned a Mexican restaurant
in Alpine, THE standard. Cooking and baking became part of
my life, therapy almost. I have worked with some of the best
chef's in the city since moving to San Diego in 1989, taking
what I've learned and making it my own.
"The last few years I have found myself doing small intimate
dinners of no more that eight quests, in friend's and client's
homes. I enjoy bringing back the 'Home Cooked Meal' feeling as
well as creating deSserts for their special occasions (the Kahlua
Cake being a favorite, it's the bartender/baker in me). With
all this, 'An Intimate Affair' was born in 1998." |

GLASS
ARTISTS' WORK FOR SALE
Mike Loftus has been blowing glass in Southern
California for eight years. His latest works reflect his fascination
with the desert area surrounding Palm Springs. He is currently
creating bowls and plates with swirls of color that are inspired
by the desert flowers, mountains and especially sunsets.
Mike has also recently collaborated with Joey Fernando, an up-and-coming
Southern California glass artist. Together they have produced
a line of "New Zealand Pearls" - globe-like monotone
vases resembling a collection of multi-colored pearls. Together
they sign their collaborative pieces "Fernando Loftus" glass.
Mike's work is included in many private collections in the US
and throughout the world. Mike is currently displaying and selling
his art at various galleries in Palm Springs and San Diego. Mike
can be seen blowing glass at various studios in the San Diego
and Palm Springs areas.
Born
in Manila, Philippines, Joey Fernando acquired
his interest in glassblowing while growing up in Seattle. After
graduating from the University of Washington in Seattle (where
all glass "gods" reside), Joey began to take glassblowing
lessons in San Diego and Palm Springs from Mike Loftus, a local
glass artist. Joey has shown astronomical growth under the apprenticeship
of Mike Loftus; he has mastered the basics and has begun to create
artwork that is unique and reflective of his desert and sea surroundings.
"Glassblowing continues to reflect travel experiences and
my surroundings; I try to capture what aI see in my artwork.
Bubbles rising from sea kelp, flashing fish scales, a perfect
pearl found while scuba diving."
Like a foreign language, Joey translates his favorite colors
and sights and captures these pictures permanently imbedded in
glass. Joey is currently showing and selling glass at the San
Diego Art Institute, the Palm Springs Desert Museum, and the
Palapas Gift Shop in Palm Desert. Joey blows glass with Mike
Loftus out of Bighorn Glass Studio in Desert Hot Springs.
All the glasswork in the restaurant is for sale. |

HOT
BLOCKS: 4200 PARK BOULEVARD, HILLCREST
San
Diego Magazine calls our block "perfectly urban."
This
little strip of storefronts seems so perfectly urban
it's hard to believe it wasn't planned. What might be
called a one-sided Main Street is a random string of
businesses that only looks as if it were carefully assembled
off an urban planner’s wish list. Journey East
is a charming boutique of Asian art and artifacts; a
couple of doors down is a coin laundry. Further down
the row are shops that sell Moroccan furnishings, vintage
clothing, clocks and watches and discounted imports;
adding to the eclectic fun is Frank the Train Man, a
model railroad enthusiast's nirvana since 1943, and the
Taoist Sanctuary. |
